Cyanobacteria: Extreme Environments and Toxic Metabolites

نویسندگان

چکیده

Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, are photosynthetic bacteria that can colonize different habitats, including extreme ones. They of great interest to the scientific community, especially because their ability produce cyanotoxins: toxic secondary metabolites potentially harmful organisms when released surface waters.

Production of Secondary Metabolites in Extreme Environments: Food- and Airborne Wallemia spp. Produce Toxic Metabolites at Hypersaline Conditions

The food- and airborne fungal genus Wallemia comprises seven xerophilic and halophilic species: W. sebi, W. mellicola, W. canadensis, W. tropicalis, W. muriae, W. hederae and W. ichthyophaga. All listed species are adapted to low water activity and can contaminate food preserved with high amounts of salt or sugar. In relation to food safety, the effect of high salt and sugar concentrations on t...

Toxic Picoplanktonic Cyanobacteria—Review

Cyanobacteria of a picoplanktonic cell size (0.2 to 2.0 µm) are common organisms of both freshwater and marine ecosystems. However, due to their small size and relatively short study history, picoplanktonic cyanobacteria, in contrast to the microplanktonic cyanobacteria, still remains a poorly studied fraction of plankton. So far, only little information on picocyanobacteria toxicity has been r...

Chapter 5: Toxic Cyanobacteria in Florida Waters

Cyanobacteria represent a common component of algal assemblages in Florida's lakes, springs, estuaries, and other marine environments. The frequency of cyanobacterial bloom reports has recently become more common and algal toxin data are just beginning to be collected with the advent of monitoring efforts and the availability of laboratories in the state capable of conducting algal toxin analys...

Knowledge, Attitude and Practices Regarding Extreme Environments and Cold Adaptation at Extreme Altitudes on the Himalayan Ranges

Introduction: Extreme-altitudes (5500 m/18045 ft and higher) pose environmental, psychophysiological, infrastructural, logistic, and ergonomic challenges that question explorer’s adaptability and mission-efficiency due to isolation, monotony, intimidating environment and terse health conditions. The assessment of an explorer’s comprehensive adaptability in extreme-altitudes is ...

Toxic cyanobacteria: the evolving molecular toolbox

persist in both freshwater and marine systems. They range from organisms that form red and brown tides to cyanobacteria that turn lakes and ponds green (Figure 1) and red. The toxins (termed “cyanotoxins”) that these organisms produce are usually secondary metabolites, and are more numerically diverse than the organisms that produce them. Here we will focus on the use of molecular methods for d...
